Rookie 20-year-old Japanese Hinako Shibuno wins Women’s British Open

Hinako Shibuno, a rookie on Japan’s LPGA tour, captured the Women’s British Open on Sunday, becoming the second Japanese golfer to win an overseas major event.

The 20-year-old, who is making her overseas debut at Woburn Golf Club in the season’s final major, shot a final round 68 to win by one stroke.

She started the final round with a two-stroke lead over South Africa’s Ashleigh Buhai, with South Korea’s Park Sung Hyun and Ko Jin Young three and four strokes back, respectively.

Shibuno has won twice this season on Japan’s domestic tour and follows compatriot Hisako Higuchi, winner of the 1977 LPGA Championship, as Japan’s only winners of an overseas golf major.
