The Tokyo winter illumination light displays are very popular and they might be some of the finest light shows in the world. Every year there are more and more illumination light displays across the city and most are free to visit. The illumination displays that go up in the Tokyo area can come in the form of the smallest light displays at a local train station, to the massive illumination displays that can cover a large area. The Midtown Christmas Illuminations in Roppongi is one of the most popular illumination displays in Tokyo. The Tokyo Midtown illumination is a massive display that incorporates visual, sound and lighting activity in a coordinated production that is really amazing. Caretta Shiodome Illumination (11/14 – 2/14)

The Caretta Shiodome’s illumination display is usually themed with popular Disney movies and is one of the most popular in Tokyo. The illumination displays will often have regular timed performances of the light shows. Tokyo Dome City Winter Illuminations (11/13 – 2/26)

The Tokyo Dome area is filled with great illumination displays during the wintertime. Every year the Tokyo Dome area presents a designed themed illumination display that is fun for the whole family. Ebisu Garden Place Illuminations (11/2 – 1/13)

The Ebisu Garden’s illumination display is reminiscent of a European city downtown Christmas market. It is very beautiful during the winter illuminations season and it is decorated with all the ornaments one would find in a Christmas winter wonderland. Tokyo Skytree Dream Christmas Illuminations (11/8 – 12/25)

The Tokyo Skytree is the tallest building in Japan. The Skytree illumination display is filled with hundreds of thousands of colourful changing lights. At the foot of Tokyo Skytree is a Christmas market selling holiday ornaments, food and drinks and more. Tama Center Illumination (11/16 – 1/13)

The Tama Center Illuminations are held in the town of “Sanrio Puroland” that is best known for being the company that is behind the famous Hello Kitty and friends characters. This a great place to bring the children and enjoy the illuminations along with the famous Japanese characters. Yomiuri Land Jewellumination (10/24 – 5/6)

Yomiuri Land is one of the largest amusement parks in Japan. In wintertime, the Yomiuri Land turns into an illumination display wonderland! This park is literally covered in millions of lights. The illumination themed displays are fantastic, and they are one of the best illumination displays anywhere. Shibuya Blue Cave Illuminations (11/29 – 12/31)

The Shibuya Blue Cave is a fairly new winter illumination display event. The Shibuya area turns blue this time of the year. The illumination display lighting turns the streets blue up leading up to the Yoyogi park and the Blue Cave illumination display. Shinjuku Winter Illuminations (11/12 – 2/16)

The Shinjuku Winter Illumination displays are very popular in Tokyo. The Shinjuku Winter illuminations are really a combination of two separate illumination displays around the South and West gates of Shinjuku Station. They have some very colorful displays and it’s conveniently located all around Shinjuku Station. Omotesando Hills Christmas Illuminations (11/28 – 1/5)

The Omotesando winter illuminations are located in the Harajuku and Omotesando area. This is a simple display, but it creates a nice illusion in the popular upper-scale shopping district. On both sides of the wide boulevard, there are large trees wrapped up in illumination lights. Inside the Omotesando Hills complex, you can find a massive lit-up Christmas tree. Marunouchi Illuminations (11/7 – 2/16)

The Marunouchi Illumination displays are unique as they are located on the cobblestone streets in the business district of the city. It is not a very large illumination display, but it is certainly worth a visit if in the area. Rikugien Gardens Illuminations (11/20 – 12/12)

The Rikugien Garden Illuminations is a great place to enjoy an illumination display in a Japanese garden setting. The Rikugien Garden illuminating display lights really bring out the changing Fall colors of the trees. Meguro River Illuminations (11/8 – 1/5)

The Meguro River Illuminations include the trees located along the Meguro River, between the Gotanda and Osaki stations. The decorated trees stretch a few kilometers along the river. The illumination display is in pink lights that represent the colors of the blooming cherry blossoms. Tokyo Illuminations (11/6 – 1/15)

The Tokyo Illuminations include many streets located between the Tokyo and Nihonbashi Stations. Many illumination displays are in the area and the theme is focused on the old days of Tokyo, the Edo period. Odaiba Island Illuminations (11/15 – 12/25)

Odaiba Island Illumination is held at 10 different locations on the Odaiba island. The various illumination displays are centered around the area’s shopping malls and landmarks. The Tokyo Tower Illuminations is a popular illumination destination at one of the most famous landmarks in Tokyo. Oi Racetrack Tokyo Illuminations (11/16 – 3/29)

The Oi Racecourse illuminations are one of the largest illumination displays in the Tokyo area. The entire area around the racecourse is filled with various kinds of illumination displays. The horse racing track will also be lit up during the nighttime races with the illumination displays. There is a fee charged for this illumination event. Omohara Illuminations (11/11 – 12/25)

The Omohara Illuminations are located on the rooftop garden at the Tokyu Plaza Omotesando. Shirokanedai’s Happo-en Autumn Foliage Illuminations (11/16 – 12/15)

The Shirokanedai’s Happo-en Illumination display covers this large Japanese garden during the Fall season. As the trees change colors the landscape is illuminated off the water by thousands of colorful lights, it’s truly a wonderful sight to see and grab photos from. The Toshimaen Winter Fantasia Illumination display is located in a popular amusement park. This is a massive illumination display event. Puro White Christmas Illuminations (11/8 – 12/25)

The Puro White Christmas illumination is located at Sanrio Puroland in Tama city. This illumination event is focused around the popular Japanese Sanrio character, Hello Kitty, and friends. This Christmas themed illumination features hundreds of thousands of colorful lights and lasers that create a great family-friendly show. Rooftop Star Garden Illuminations (11/26 – 2/24)

The Rooftop Star Garden at the Ginza Six building development turns the roof of the building into an exciting illumination display light show. Country Farm Tokyo German Village Illuminations (11/1 – 4/5)

The Country Farm Tokyo German Village is a nature and theme park. In the wintertime, this park comes alive and it produces one of the most popular illumination displays in the Tokyo area. There is over three million LED lights on display and there is a 70-meter long tunnel of lights that is the highlight of the event. The Ashikaga Flower Park Illuminations is one of the most popular illuminations displays in Japan. This stunning winter illumination event is held at the Flower Fantasy-A Light Flower Garden and there are over five million colorful LED lights at this massive park that pairs the lights and flowers together in a fantastic collaboration. Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse (11/23 – 12/25)

The Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse is a nice place to visit in Yokohama during the Christmas season. Enoshima Winter Illuminations (11/23 – 2/16)

The Enoshima Winter Illuminations (The Jewel of Shonan) features a fantastic collection of colorful illuminations displays that are located over several locations on Enoshima Island. There is an “Island Candle” or lighthouse and every winter it hosts one of the best illumination displays in Japan. Considered one of the top illumination spots in Asia, it is a photo and Instagram favorite for tourists and locals.
